“Jaani… Yeh Bacchon Ke Khelne Ki Cheez Nahi hai,” (This is not meant for kids to play with), was the signature dialogue of legendary Hindi film actor Raj Kumar who made the Rampuri chaku (knife) famous. The Rampuri chaku was once the favourite weapon in Hindi film industry and was used in almost all the movies by villains in the 1970s and even in the 1980s. However, these knives were eventually replaced by the firearms in films, probably influenced by Hollywood.

The Rampuri knife or Rampuri Churi is an Indian gravity knife of formidable reputation having a single-edged blade roughly 9 to 15 inches long. Usually it is the switchblade auto-lever lock type. It formed the basic weapon for Indian thugs or “goondas” during the beginning of the 19th century. The name Rampuri comes from the town of Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. The royal blade smiths of local Nawabs of Rampur started making knives after the popularization of firearms after the 18th century. These folders were once ubiquitous throughout India, but are now much less commonly found due to the availiability of cheap Chinese knives.
